Excerpt from Feathers - T.E.Hodden;
"“Scared.” She said finally.
He nodded. “I am. For my brothers. For the lads. For almost all the men I know. And for those who have wait for them.” He drew a long breath. “I am very much afraid that knowing the peace and love they will find in their eternal reward does not stop me wanting to enjoy their company on the mortal coil for as long as I possibly can.” He put a hand to her cheek.
“So, you are afraid?” she whispered.
He nodded. “I have been scared to ask you...to step out with me, for too many years. What I worry about now is beyond fear, I am sorry to say.”
Kerry ignored the knot of anger in her stomach, only to notice the fluttering of her heart. The yearning. “So, Wendy was right?”
“Perhaps. But that is not all to be considered.” His eyes welled with pain, as his back straightened and he tried to hide his feelings behind a stiff upper lip that did not entirely suit him.
“Ask me now.” Kerry whispered.
“Would you allow me to buy you tea? Or a drink? Or...” He offered her a nervous smile. “Please?”
“Yes.” She took his hands. “I would like that very much indeed.”
He had not, after all, said he was a coward. Or a Conchy, an objector. Just that he was scared. Kerry smiled as brightly as she could
A good man, a kind and an honest man, smiled back. Somebody who would always do the right thing.
He just needed a little help."
