Review for Fatal Harmony (The Vein Chronicles #1) by Anne Malcom: ★★★★

Fatal Harmony (The Vein Chronicles #1)Fatal Harmony by Anne Malcom

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

::..Reviewed For Red's Midnight Readers..::

I was kindly provided with an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review. I have given it 4 stars.

When I started reading Fatal Harmony I struggled to get into the story and I found leading lady Isla quite obnoxious, quite frankly I didn't like her and I thought It would hinder the reading experience.

However, I fear I may have judged this book far too quickly.

It was cleverly constructed and very intelligently written.

You quickly learn that all is not well within the vampire community and Isla uses hides behind her designer clothes and sarcasm, using them as a shield to stop anything or anyone from getting too close with good reason.

As the book progresses you see a different side to her character. Isla has lead a long and often lonely life. Her love and tolerance of the human race has seen her ostracized from much of the vampire community who believe themselves superior and several attempts made on her life. Many of which possibly orchestrated by her very own family. However, Isla's troubles are set to get much worse in the form of dark and brooding slayer "Thorne".

Isla is a strong female character, who knows what she wants and exactly how to get it. She makes no excuses for who she is or what she is and it makes for a very refreshing read.
There are no damsels in distress here.

Although much of her humor and wit is a defense mechanism, she often had me stitches.

Thorne, on the other hand is a typical alpha male who meets his match of arch enemy Isla. Together these pair are on fire.

The story flowed nicely and flowed at a steady pace, so if you are looking for a quick, light hearted read this may not be for you but if you DO want a clever read with lots of unexpected twists and turns and a whole host of supernatural characters then this is definitely for you.

I can not wait for the next book!!!

Blurb

I may be the villain of the story, but at least I get a leading role.
Evil is a term thrown around history and literature as if it's something so easily definable. A concept to fight against.
Evil doesn’t exist.
Neither does ‘good.’
Vampires do, though.
I just happen to be one.
I’ve cruised through the centuries managing to avoid all the wars, supernatural and human, but still going to all the best parties.
I would say I avoided bloodshed, but it’s kind of part of the whole ‘vampire’ thing.
I’ve lived on the fringes of a society that considered cruelty and sadism favorable character traits for almost five hundred years. Now I'm in the middle of a war that might just put my nonbeating heart in a lot of danger.
Battles, I can handle.
The impossible attraction between me and the vampire slayer, not to mention the penetrating gaze of the king of our race, on the other hand?
I might not get out undead.
